Graduate Support Initiative (GSI)
The Department of Asian Studies will be offering two types of internal grant competitions for the 2009-2010 academic year: Graduate Student Travel Grants and Ph.D. Dissertation Completion Grants.
Graduate Support Initiative Criteria
The Graduate Support Initiative (GSI) is a system for funding graduate students through entrance scholarships, multi-year funding packages, tuition awards, and scholarship top-ups. Within the Faculty of Arts' Departments and Schools, all incoming graduate students are considered for GSI funding. Applicant files are reviewed by faculty members on the Graduate Committee, which establishes rankings (rankings are based on transcripts, publications, creative works, proposals, conference presentations, referees' comments, etc.).
The Department of Asian Studies has allocated its GSI funds to offer the most attractive packages possible for incoming Ph.D. students, as well as to provide tuition relief to incoming MA students, with an eye toward making the Asian Studies graduate program competitive with any in the world. In order to increase the competitiveness of existing graduate students and to assure that existing students make timely progress toward degree completion, the Department is also allocating a portion of its GSI funds toward competitive graduate student conference travel grants and dissertation writing completion grants, which will be awarded in late September.
