Normative Guidelines for Progress to Ph.D. Degree

Note: FoGS guidelines have established 6 years as the maximum time to Ph.D.; the 5-year program outlined below assumes students will also take a year abroad at some point in their studies for language training or dissertation research
 
Upon Arrival
• Establish language requirements with advisor
• Choose courses, bearing in mind PhD requirements regarding "theory/methodology" courses both inside and outside the department
Year 1
• Course work, including Asia 570
• Work toward language requirements
Year 2
• Complete course work requirements
• Constitute comprehensive exam committee
• Compose and finalize comprehensive exam list
• Read for comprehensive exam
Year 3
• Complete language requirements (either through challenge exam or coursework at the 300-level, as established with advisor)
• Read for comprehensive exam
Late Year 3 / Summer before Year 4
• Write comprehensive exams*
• Defend comprehensive exam*
Year 4
• Form dissertation committee
• Defend dissertation prospectus
• Begin writing dissertation
Year 5
• Finish writing dissertation
• Oral Defense (bearing in mind that the final draft of the dissertation, approved by all committee members, must be filed with FoGS 2 months before the date of the oral defense)
 
* Note: According to FoGS guidelines, students are expected to complete their comprehensive examination within 24 months from the date of initial registration. The department usually files for an extension of this period during the student’s third year, if necessary. A student who is not admitted to candidacy within 36 months from date of initial registration must withdraw from the program. Extension of this period may be permitted by the Dean of Graduate Studies in exceptional circumstances.
