UBC Asian Studies is pleased to report that our new "UBC Chinese Character Tool" app is finally available for sale on iTunes:

UBC Asian Studies Wins CNIE-RCIE Award for Japanese 100/101 Project
Our Japanese 100/101 project was selected for an Award of Excellence in the Instructional Design category of the CNIE-RCIE Awards 2012. The Canadian Network for Innovation in Education (CNIE) is a national organization of professionals committed to excellence in the provision of innovation in education in Canada. In particular, the instructional Design category is the most competitive category among the others. This project is a collaboration between Asian Studies and the Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology. The award will be presented at the CNIE-RCIE Conference, May 14-16 in Canmore, Alberta.

Government of Japan MEXT Research Student Scholarship: Applications Now Available
Greetings from the Consulate General of Japan:
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan is currently accepting applications for its 2013 Research Student for foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities.
The Research Student Scholarship is aimed at university graduates, born on or after April 2, 1978 (for the 2013 scholarship year) who wish to study as research students. The research study area should be the same field that the applicant has studied or a related field. The term of the scholarship is 18 months to two years (including 6 months of Japanese language training) starting in April or October 2013.
Application guides and forms are available on the Consulate General of Japan's website:
www.vancouver.ca.emb-japan.go.jp/en/culture/mext.htm. Deadline for the 2013 scholarship year: May 18, 2012. Applicants who successfully pass the written application screening are required to undertake an interview and examination (English and Japanese language) to be held in late June/early July.
