ASIA 501 (3): Research Methods And Source Materials In Classical Chinese Studies

"Overall, the instructor was first rate. Presentation was generally well structured and I was impressed by her extensive knowledge. An excellent course. Dr. Chiu-Duke did a very good job of relating the course content in a lively and interesting manner. I wish I had taken a course like this years ago. Excellent teacher; extensive knowledge; great intellectual insight; good sense of responsibility; and enthusiastic attitude in her teaching, which has made her class most interesting and stimulating.

Good atmosphere in class; lectures were good, well-rounded, interesting, and well-organized. She was lively and animated in class and she showed interest in our specific areas of research. I learned a lot. We covered a lot of ground, and I am more confident in my research skill. The exercises were fair and interesting and I became acquainted with topics I would otherwise not have known.

In over eight years of studies in universities and colleges, Professor Chiu-Duke is one of the very best instructors I have ever met. Very knowledgeable [and] therefore could offer very precise answers to our problems and questions; prepared the lessons very well; my classmate and I have learned a lot. I sincerely hope that she will continue to teach this course."

ASIA 320 (6): History Of Chinese Civilization (from ancient time to 1840, with emphasis on the period up to AD 1000). 1997-98

"Best class of the year. She is the best teacher by far. Mrs. Chiu-Duke is one of the best professors Iıve ever had throughout my 5 university years. Excellent instructor and amazing effort. Enthusiastic. I enjoyed the class all year; best class I had; most interesting. [She] showed deep interest in the class and it motivated us to learn more. Great rapport and encouragement of student participation. She developed my
interest in Asian Studies area. I hope Dr. Chiu-Duke can teach history classes next year."

ASIA 311 (3): History Of Chinese Civilization (from ancient time to 1840, with emphasis on the period up to AD 1000). 1998-99

"She is definitely one of the best professors I've had, as a professor and as a person. Best UBC prof[essor] Iıve had [to] serve and teach the student[s]; [I] have never actually enjoyed a university course as much as this one. Terrific teacher; enthusiastic and helpful to make subject interesting. Best Prof[essor]. A reason why I chose to take this course was [that] she was teaching it. [She] stimulated my interest in Chinese history with her interest on the topic and her teaching method. Easy to
understand yet demanding. Sense of humor often lightens the class atmosphere. Enthusiastic personality makes her students [want] to engage in what she teaches. Definitely taking her semester 2 class. Excellent teaching; contagious enthusiasm for the subject; wonderful course.

ASIA 321 (6, later 3): The Civilization Of Late Imperial China (from the Song (Sung) to the Qing (Chıing), or 1000 to 1644)

"Outstanding. I wish that all my professors were of the same quality. Presents the material with more passion and liveliness than I have ever seen. Very well organized; demonstrate[d] extraordinary knowledge about pre-modern Chinese history; encouraged me [to take] further Chinese history courses. [I] would recommend instructor to my classmates. [She] expressed great concern for the students and great understanding in her field and other related fields; always willing to go into greater details and expand on the subject. I don't think that any other profs would present the big picture and then in detail as clearly as she can. Chiu-Duke invited thought provoking discussion where appropriate. [She] was very careful to cite current sources and ideas relevant to the lecture.

She has a great memory. [She] learned [the names of] all the people in the class and remembered different interests which the students had. Her teaching made the subject come alive and helped me to see the larger trends which occurred across time amidst the many specific changes that occurred. I appreciated the attempt to look at civilization from a political and cultural level with emphasis on art and literature. Her quotes from different literature[s] really helped bring these alive. I appreciate being able to compare and contrast the dynasties on a larger level while still learning enough details to see the differences and the individual character which each dynasty has. Great course.

Dr. Chiu-Duke is an amazing instructor! She knows so much and she delivers her knowledge with such enthusiasm. I will definitely enroll in other classes taught by her. . . . she teaches with such passion and vigour. Made me more interested in Chinese history. She made class quite interesting and I actually looked forward to all her lectures.

ASIA 417 (6) (now 411[3]): Chinese Political Thought And Institutions (from earliest times to 1949).

Outstanding lecturer. A professor of exceptional quality; extremely knowledgeable in subject; supportive of the development of skills pertaining to scholarly attainment. Very enthusiastic; very helpful; encourages independent thinking; always tried to answer questions in the best way; encouraged class participation; certainly interested me greatly on each subject; her love and understanding of Chinese history [was] definitely transferred to the students; concerned for welfare of student[s]. She is the best teacher I have had [in] my four years at UBC. This course is very unique, and especially for the students of political science it gives knowledge of very fundamental construction of human political activities in ancient times.

Our professor is very knowledgeable; I can't say enough good things about our professor Josephine. Her lectures are well paced, well composed, enthusiastically given and interesting. The topics are often extremely complex, and foreign to our Western-based traditions, but she explains carefully, thoroughly with examples from many traditions (both modern and historic). [Her] anecdotes regarding specific emperors, eunuchs, concubines made the class much more interesting.

This professor is probably the most articulate and knowledgeable of any prof[essor] I have had. Many times she has amazed [me] with her in depth understanding of the content of this course. I would certainly recommend this class to any one even remotely interested in Asian Studies. This class was one of my most rewarding. I would DEFINITELY advise my friends to take it -- especially because of the teacher!!

CHINESE 400 (6): Advanced Classical Chinese This is a literature (wenxue) course in the broadest sense of the term reading in the Chinese classics of literature, philosophy, history and it satisfies the Arts Literature Requirement.

2000-01: If time permits, teach more classes (especially History). Teach more advance(d) Classical Chinese. Fascinating explanations of course materialsı background. Excellent Job I enjoyed every bit of this class (even the tests as well!); the materials were excellent, the background info was excellent; I will definitely want to take more courses by this instructor. An excellent teacher, very knowledgeable; I
would recommend this professor to anyone; she made the content of this course, which could be boring if taught by another prof, very informative and very interesting. Class atmosphere is always good. This is one of the most rewarding classes that Iıve taken this year; this course/instructor very effectively strengthened my ability and understanding of Chinese literature. The best prof. I have ever had! Prof. J. [Chiu-] Duke has demonstrated an excellent role model for rest of the class and has made me interested in Chinese historical literature even more. She gives every student a chance to participate in the class, so that the shy students wonıt be left out. Always encourages students to participate & express own thoughts; because of this course I [have] become interested in taking more classical Chinese classes. She encourages student[s] to think independently.

2001-02: Dr. [Chiu-] Duke is a gifted lecturer & a great scholar. It is a waste of her talents for Dr. Duke to teach Chin(ese) language courses. I strongly recommend the Department to open courses (ex. Chin(ese) political thought) related to her specialization to make full use of her scholarship. A very good teacher; I can develop more interest in this course. She taught us quite deep of (in) this course; a great prof.; Really deep. A very responsible & knowledgeable teacher; and also very friendly to students. A very well organized and thoughtful instructor.

CHINESE 430, Term One 2002-03 (3):

[Chiu-Duke's] formidable intellect and enthusiasm used splendidly to enliven this course; so enthused sometimes she draws one into the very spirit and temper of the [ancient Chinese] text being discussed. Professor Chiu-Duke encouraged students to learn about knowledge that's outside the text, like morals; a caring instructor; one of the best courses offered at UBC. I feel grateful to attend Chinese 430, and I have definitely learned a lot of new knowledge; because of her enthusiasm, I am more interested in studying Chinese literature than before; thank you. I am very impressed by the instructor's thorough knowledge and enthusiasm to the subject matter; she has provided a very meaningful perspective for me to understand Chinese culture. The course is well-designed in that it is more than a language course; it has its root[s] in the profound history of Chinese civilization; our language skill are enhanced, but more importantly, our visions was broadened. The instructor teaches very efficient[ly] considering the multiculturalism of the class; she speaks English fluently in teaching other student[s] with a weaker Chinese level; she is very patient with student[s] who are weak at the course. Course is well-organized and interesting!!; It's good to discuss not only the translations of poems, but including philosophy and historical backgrounds; she is the coolest prof I've ever met!! She is the best; the best of the best! Very knowledgeable on the subject; displays a lot of interest in the subject. Too harsh and picky on marking, but a very caring and committed instructor in teaching not only the concept[s] but the history and philosophy in detail.

CHINESE 431, Term Two 2002-03 (3):

Best instructor ever known! I have never met an instructor [as] good [as] her. As a result [of this course], I think more independently about my life and the world around me. Thank you for making this class the most interesting class of all of my classes. I have never imagined that a course [could] be so interesting. I was really amazed [by] her expertise and knowledge [of] Chinese literature. Excellent; my interest in this subject [was] tremendously aroused. One of the best courses I have ever taken in my four years of study at UBC.

2000-01: The instructor is very knowledgeable about the history of China, and is very willing to share her knowledge and learning with the students; encourages students to express their own ideas and opinions and respects their positions; she also care deeply about the students, and concerns (is concerned) about their studies and well being. Josephine is one of the best teacher(s) I've ever met; very knowledgeable; takes her teaching very seriously; students are greatly encouraged to participate in discussions in class; hope that this course will continue in the future. Excellent; very fair; respects the student a lot; one of the best, if not the best professor I've ever had; I would recommend her to anyone. A wonderful teacher; we often go to her office-hour to discuss a lot of issues unrelated to school materials [and] able to gain valuable knowledge and insights; keeps us in track with the world and the latest news; overall, she is the best and the most open minded instructor I have ever had. I think this is also a history course which I think is really good; [from it I] have more understanding why and how Chinese society is shaped. Professor Chiu-Duke is one of the best professor(s) that Iıve had; encourages independent thinking. She motivates students to think and be creative; an excellent teacher. She is very knowledge(able) about Chinese history; teaches us a lot of things about Chinese history, and even lots of practical experience. Her unique aspects of looking at the
materials are thought provoking. Itıs good that she teaches her students to think critically & to express ideas when appropriate. We can be benefited (could benefit) more by listening to more of her lectures.

2001-02: She is the best instructor that I have ever had in UBC!; encouraged students' thought. After this course, I have another feeling toward modern literature and [have] become more interested in it. Passion and enthusiasm of the instructor make this course interesting. She knows all the material so well that she can answer any questions students have; I would like to take her course again next year. Shows great respect to students; stimulates our way of thinking about like. Definitely makes (made) me become interested in Chinese 20th century literature. Shows great knowledge of the field and gives lectures with enthusiasm; the teacher should give more lectures [rather than allowing student presentations]. She is a book, a book with [a] wide-range of knowledge about Chinese history and literature; she taught us not only Chinese literature, but also the morality that we should know as a human being; she is a combination of a teacher and a mother; she cares about everyone with her true heart. You are too kind, but your lecture(s) [are] excellent; absolutely extremely excellent. [Course] inspire(s) & encourage(s) deep thinking about life. It's very joyful to attend the class.
