WOMEN AND MALAY LITERATURE: STUDIES IN GENDER, REPRESENTATION AND IDENTITY
This is a study of how women have been represented in works of literature written in Malay in the period 1880-1920. It examines the discourses relating to gender and race that emerge from those literary texts and relates this to the cultural and social context within which they are produced and received. It presents critical feminist readings of texts in Chinese Malay and Betawi Malay to a and scrutinizes the literary and journalistic activities that developed as part of the radical changes which took place in the Dutch East Indies around 1900, in order to gain a better insight into social structures, and specifically the position of women.
