Admissions

Application for admissions and course registration are done in two separate procedures. To register for courses, you must first be admitted to the University. New Applicants to UBC for Undergraduate Degree Programs and Non-Degree Programs.

If you have never been registered at UBC, you need to complete an Undergraduate Admission Application. UBC admission requirements and application for both degree programs and non-degree programs can be accessed on the web by going to www.askme.vancouver.ubc.ca or you may obtain an Application Form from:

Once you are admitted you may contact the Faculty of Arts Advising Office (Buchanan D111,  604-822-4028  ) for any pressing questions. Advisors in the Arts Academic Advising Office will be there with any information you cannot find. Please check the Arts Advising website first as students will require an appointment to see one of the advisors.

All essential course information is listed in the UBC course calendar or on our website. You may access it by clicking to UBC Student Calendar. If you are interested in purchasing a student calendar catalog please contact the registrar's office.  (604) 822-9836  . The UBC Asian Studies Departmental Undergraduate Advisors will generally be available for consultations during their drop-in office hours. It is not necessary to make an appointment. Our advisors help you with the following:

  • clarify any questions that you have
  • advise course(s) to take for major/minor
  • certify documents for graduating students
  • check if students meet their grad requirements

Students wishing to enroll in any of Chin 100 - 312 language courses must attend the placement interview for the Chinese language courses to find out which appropriate course and section to register in.

Students who are not sure which Japanese courses to take, have any questions about our Japanese language courses, or require a placement exam please contact the Japanese Language Advisor or check the above-mentioned link regarding important dates information.

Requirements for Majors

Requirements for Majors and for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Asian Area Studies, Chinese, Japanese, or South Asian Languages are stipulated on the appropriate web pages and in the student calendar.

Students completing their courses for a Bachelor's degree at the University of British Columbia may, if they lack not more than 12 credits, register in courses open to graduate students, provided that they keep within an overall maximum of 36 credits. They will receive credit for such courses toward a higher degree only after registering for such a degree.

The Department encourages and tries to facilitate contacts between students and faculty and among students at various levels in its programs. It is departmental policy that each member of the teaching staff should post and announce his or her office hours and should accommodate, as far as possible, student consultation even outside of those office hours. Students are encouraged to seek appointments with the faculty for appropriate consultation.

The departmental lounge in the Asian Centre is a frequently used place for informal gatherings of students and faculty. Groups meet there on a regular basis for conversation practice in Asian languages.

Office of the Ombudsperson for Students

The Office of the Ombudsperson for Students works with UBC community members to ensure students are treated fairly and can learn, work and live in a fair, equitable and respectful environment.

Reporting directly to the President, the office is an independent, impartial and confidential resource for students at UBC Vancouver, jointly funded by the AMS, GSS and UBC.
