Registration guide for Japanese Language Courses
All modern Japanese language courses are available on the Student Information System (SIS). Students are responsible for registering themselves for course(s) appropriate for their levels and there is no need for an interview or placement exam for most of the students except three groups. To ensure that 1) you know whether you need to attend an advising session and/or take a placement exam and 2) you enroll for an appropriate course if you do not need to attend an advising session, please read the Registration Categories below carefully. Any student who does not follow the procedure may be removed from the course at the beginning of term upon a background check conducted by the instructor. Please read the following Frequently Asked Questions for additional information.

2) Although a recommendation will be given by an advisor on the advising/placement exam days listed above, a student may be placed at another level at the discretion of the course instructor after classes have begun. In such a case, a space will be guaranteed in the appropriate course.
3) If you are unable to attend any advising session or take a placement exam during summer, you should try to register into a course which you think is most appropriate for your level. However, in such a case, if you are referred to another course at the discretion of the instructor at the beginning of term, a space will not be guaranteed.
4) A set of textbooks for the Japanese 100 and 200 level courses are reserved at the Asian Library for your reference. You may also consult Course Descriptions for information on textbooks.
Waiting List
Due to the demand for our courses, we have a wait list for classes that are full. The Waiting list can be found online here. We do not take phone calls or email requests.
For wait listed students, please note the following:
1) You are not permitted to sign up until after your registration date and only if the class is full.
2) You are allowed to sign up for a maximum of two sections per course.
3) The wait list does not guarantee you a seat and works on a priority basis; if seats do become available after classes have begun, they are given to students who are in their 4th year and need the course to guaduate or to students who have declared either a major or minor in Asian Studies/Japanese Studies.
4) Please check the Student Service Centre periodically for available seats. Some students do change their mind before the term begins and it is your responsibility to register for a course as it becomes available and to not rely on the wait list for a placement.
5) As the wait list will take effect the first day of class, you are asked to attend the first day/week of class to see if seats open up.Ifyou do not show up in class, your name will be deleted from the list.
Switching of Session:
If you want to switch session after registering for a course due to time conflict or any other reason, you need to sign up for the waitlist for the section of your choice and follow the standard procedure for maintaining your wait-listed status (see above). Having registered for a section does not mean that you can make a request to switch the section due to the high demand of our classes. Please do not contact the instructors about the possibility of switching as they have to be fair to everyone on the wait list and therefore will only comply to the departmental policy on switching and the handling of waitlist.
