Japanese Language Courses
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS (Modern Japanese Language Courses starting 2006 Winter)
Students are strongly recommended to
a) take the following pairs of courses consecutively in the same academic year:
JAPN 100/101, JAPN 102/103, or JAPN 150/151; JAPN 200/201, JAPN 202/203;
JAPN 300/301, JAPN 302/303 and
b) take the following set of courses concurrently in the same academic year
JAPN 200/201 and JAPN 202/203; JAPN 300/301 and JAPN 302/303.
JAPN 100 - Beginning Japanese I (A) - Non-intensive, Term 1, 3 credits.
Pre-requisite: none or Japanese 9 and/or Japanese 10, or Beginners' (Introductory) Japanese11 or equivalent. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 101 in the same academic year.
Textbook: Genki 1 (L. 1 - L. 6 )
JAPN 101 Beginning Japanese I (B) - Non-intensive, Term 2, 3 credits.
Pre-requisite: JAPN 100 or Japanese 11 or equivalent. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 100 in the same academic year (except Japanese 11 students).
Textbook: Genki I (L. 7 - L. 12 )
JAPN 102 Beginning Japanese II (A) - Non-intensive, Term 1, 3 credits.
Pre-requisite: JAPN 101 or Japanese 12 or equivalent. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 103 in the same academic year.
Textbook: Genki II (L. 13 - L. 18 )
JAPN 103 Beginning Japanese II (B) - Non-intensive, Term 2, 3 credits.
Pre-requisite: JAPN 102 or equivalent. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 102 in the same academic year.
Textbook: Genki II (L.19- L.23)
JAPN 150 Intensive Beginning Japanese I (A) - Intensive, Term 1, 6 credits.
Pre-requisite: none or Japanese 9 and/or Japanese 10, or Beginners' (Introductory) Japanese 11 or equivalent. This course is equivalent to JAPN 100 and JAPN 101. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 151 in the same academic year.

JAPN 151 Intensive Beginning Japanese II (B) - Intensive, Term 2, 6 credits.
Prerequisite: JAPN 150 or Japanese 12 or equivalent. This course is equivalent to JAPN 102 and JAPN 103. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 150 in the same academic year (except Japanese 12 students).
Textbook: Genki II. The Japan Times. (L.13- L.23)
JAPN 200 Intermediate Japanese: Reading and Writing (A) - Term 1, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 201. Pre-requsite: JAPN 103 or JAPN 151 or equivalent.
Textbook: An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese, The Japan Times (L.1-L.5; readings only) and materials compiled by instructors.
JAPN 201 Intermediate Japanese: Reading and Writing (B) - Term 2, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 200. Pre-requisite: JAPN 200 or equivalent.
Textbook: An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese, The Japan Times (L.1-L.11; readings only) and materials compiled by instructors.
JAPN 202 Intermediate Japanese: Conversation and Composition (A) - Term 1, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 203. Pre-requisite: JAPN 103 or JAPN 151 or equivalent.
Textbook: An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese, The Japan Times. (L.1-L.5; conversations only) and materials compiled by instructors.
JAPN 203 Intermediate Japanese: Conversation and Composition (B) - Term 2, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 202. Pre-requisite: JAPN 202 or equivalent.
Textbook: An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese, The Japan Times (L.6-L.14; conversation only) and materials compiled by instructors.
JAPN 210 Intermediate JapaneseI Part A - Term 1, 3 credits. An integrated course covering topics on various aspects of Japanese language, culture, customs, and cross-cultural communication designed for students who wish to develop linguistic, socio-linguistic, and strategic competencies in speaking, listening, reading and writing modern Japanese at an intermediate level.
(Non-intensive)
Prerequisite: JAPN 103 or JAPN 151.
Co-requisite: JAPN 210 and JAPN 211 are normally taken in the same year.
JAPN 211 Intermediate Japanese I Part B - Term 2, 3 credits. Continuation of JAPN 210. (Non-intensive)
Prerequisite: JAPN 210.
Co-requisite: JAPN 210 and JAPN 211 are normally taken in the same year.
JAPN 212 Intermediate Japanese II Part A - Term 1, 3 credits. Continuation of JAPN 211. (Non-intensive)
Prerequisite: One of JAPN 211, JAPN 250.
Co-requisite: JAPN 212 and 213 are normally taken in the same year.
JAPN 213 Intermediate Japanese II Part B - Term 2, 3 credits. Continuation of JAPN 212. (Non-intensive)
Prerequisite: JAPN 212.
Co-requisite: JAPN 212 and JAPN 213 are normally taken in the same year.
JAPN 250 Intensive IntermediateJapanese I - Term 1, 6 credits. An integrated course covering topics on various aspects of Japanese language, culture, customs, and cross-cultural communication designed for students who wish to develop linguistic, socio-linguistic, and strategic competencies in speaking, listening, reading and writing modern Japanese at an intermediate level.
Prerequisite: One of JAPN 103 or JAPN 151.
Co-requisite: JAPN 250 and JAPN 251 are normally taken in the same year.

JAPN 251 Intensive Intermediate Japanese II - Term 2, 6 credits. Continuation of JAPN 250. Equivalent to JAPN 212 and JAPN 213.
Prerequisite: One of JAPN 211 or JAPN 250.
Co-requisite: JAPN 250 and JAPN 251 are normally taken in the same year.
JAPN 300 Advanced Modern Japanese: Reading and Writing (A) - Term1, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN301. Pre-requisite: JAPN 201 or equivalent. Students are strongly recommened to have completed JAPN 202 and JAPN 203 prior to enrolling in this course although they are not pre-requisites.

JAPN 301 Advanced Japanese: Reading and Writing (B) - Term 2, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 300. Pre-requisite: JAPN 300 or equivalent.

JAPN 302 Advanced Modern Japanese: Conversation and Composition (A) -Term1, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 303. Pre-requisite:JAPN 203 or equivalent. Students are strongly recommended to have completed JAPN 201 prior to taking this course although it is not a pre-requisite.

JAPN 303 Advanced Modern Japanese: Conversation and Composition (B) - Term 2, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 302. Pre-requisite: JAPN 302 or equivalent.

JAPN 311 Introduction to Classical Japanese I (A) - Term 1, 3 credits. The grammar necessary to read classical Japanese (bungo bumpo) will be presented in this course, and the students will be asked to learn the system thoroughly. The objective of the course is to gain a basic knowledge of Classical Japanese grammar and lexicon.
Textbook: The course materials will be given at cost in the beginning of class.
JAPN 312 Introduction to Classical Japanese I (B) - Term 2, 3 credits. Based on the knowledge and analytical skills acquired in Japanese 311, Japanese 312 introduces students to fairly simple kanbun (Classical Chinese read according to Classical/Literary Japanese). The objective of the course is to gain a basic knowledge of the mechanics of kambun kundoku (Classical Chinese translated into classical/literary Japanese).
Textbook: The course materials will be given at cost in the beginning of class.
JAPN 406 Readings in Modern Japanese Essays - Term 1 and Term 2 , 3 credits. Pre-requisite: JAPN 301 or equivalent. Students are strongly recommended to have completed JAPN 303 prior to taking this course.

JAPN 408 Readings in Modern Japanese Literature - Term 1 and Term 2, 3 credits. Pre-requisite: JAPN 406 or equivalent and instructor's permission.

JAPN 410 Advanced Oral Communication (A) - Term 1, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 411. Pre-requisite: JAPN 301 and JAPN 303, or equivalent.

JAPN 411 Advanced Oral Communication (B) - Term 2, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 410. Pre-requisite: JAPN 410 or equivalent.

JAPN 416 Newspaper Japanese (A) - Term 1, 3 credits. Usually taken in conjunction with JAPN 417. Pre-requisite: JAPN 301 and JAPN 303, or equivalent.
