New Curriculum for JAPN 200-Level

Announcement on 200-level Curriculum Change

Dear All,

We are pleased to announce that a curriculum change for the 200-level Japanese courses will be implemented in 2006W. Starting from September 2006, integrated Japanese courses emphasizing all four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) will be offered at the 200-level, replacing the old curriculum where reading skill and conversation skill are taught separately. We believe the curriculum change will provide students a solid foundation in basic language skills before they proceed to the upper levels where they concentrate on developing specific skills based on their needs and interests.

In order to ensure a smooth transition from the old to the new curriculum, before you do your course planning, please read the attachment regarding the following carefully:

1) course titles under the old and new curriculum;

2) tentative course offerings for 2006S, 2006W, 2007S, and 2007W;

3) prerequisite for continuing on to the 200- and 300-levels; and

4) message for students currently enrolled in JAPN 103/151, JAPN 200-level courses, JAPN 101/150 and JAPN 300-level courses.

It is important to note that while 2006W is a transition year where both old curriculum and new curriculum will be offered, from 2007S onwards, 1) courses in the old curriculum will no longer be offered; and 2) all students will be required to have completed twelve credits of 200-level course work (either under the old curriculum or new curriculum) before continuing on to the 300-level.

The information on curriculum change is also posted on the Departmental website (www.asia.ubc.ca). Please consult it for updates. Should you have any questions, please contact Dr. Rebecca Chau (email:rchau@mail.ubc.ca).

Course Titles:
The new 200-level courses are structured in the same way as the existing 100-level courses. Students must take JAPN 210, 211, 212 and 213 (or JAPN 250 and 251) in sequence.

Message to students who are enrolled in 200-level courses but have not completed all of JAPN 200/201/202/203 in 2005W (or prior to 2005W)

Students MUST study under the old curriculum and cannot take courses in the new curriculum. In most cases students are not affected by the new curriculum since the prerequisite for the 300-level Japanese will remain the same in 2006W (a minimum of 6 credit of 200-level course work though 12 credit of course work is highly recommended). The only students affected by the curriculum change are those who have not completed all four 200-level courses but plan to enroll in 300-level courses in or after 2007S; they must complete all the 200-level courses (JAPN 200/201/202/203) in 2006S or 2006W.
