Sanskrit

Introductory Sanskrit - SANS102 (001) (6) The aim is to acquaint the student with the most common vocabulary and the most important gram-matical features of Classical Sanskrit. Any student who completes the course should be able to proceed to reading simple works in Classical and Epic Sanskrit (Ramayana, Mahabharata etc.) with occasional help from a dictionary and a reference grammar. Use of language cassettes is part of the instructional method. Students interested in linguistics, Classics, medieval and modern Indian languages, philosophies, religions, and the history of ancient and medieval India will benefit from this course. No prerequisite. Text: Devavanipravesika: an Introduction to the Sanskrit Language by Robert P. Goldman

Intermediate Sanskrit - SANS 200 - (001) (6) Coverage of grammar not treated in Sanskrit 102 and consolidation of the gains made in that course will be the principal objectives in the first term. In the second term, the students will be exposed to a substantial body of relatively simple selections, so that their fluency of reading will improve. The selections will be made from Epic and classical periods of Sanskrit literature and may include parts of texts like the Bhagavad-gita/Maha-bharata and the Vetala-pańca-vimsati. The course will be useful for those who wish to learn more about Indian story literature, popular poetry, religions, and philosophies. Prerequisite: SANS 102 or equivalent. Text: same as for SANS 102 (later lessons) and photocopies of readings supplied by Instructor.

Further readings in Sanskrit - SANS 300 (001) (6) Study of selected texts belonging to a particular period (e.g. Vedic) or representing a specific branch of kavya (poetic literature) or sastra (technical philosophical literature). Prerequisite: SANS 200 or equivalent. Text: photocopies of appropriate materials will be supplied by Instructor
